GLOBAL STUDIES
Ms. Collopy’s Classroom Expectations
Students are expected to:
a) Work hard
b) Do their best
c) Do what is right
Students not meeting the expectations presented may expect the following:
First incident- student will receive a verbal warning
Second incident- student will receive a take a break
Third incident- student will fall under Chronic Behavior Policy/PBIS
Tardiness to class
Tardiness to class is unacceptable. You must be in the room when the bell rings otherwise you will be marked tardy if you do not have a pass. Tardiness will be documented as they occur. _4_ ( FOUR ) tardies will fall under Chronic Behavior Policy/PBIS & will result in notification to parents/guardians. The following _1_ ( ONE ) tardy will result in a notification to the office AND for every tardy after that, according to school policy. See policy per administration.
Start of class
Students should head to their seats immediately after the bell rings. The bell signals that the teacher can start taking attendance. Students will need to be respectful while attendance is being taken.
Locker, bathroom & drinking fountain use
Students should use passing time to take care of this business. However, students will be allowed to use the bathroom or go to their lockers to get work IF they use a planner pass.
You MUST have the planner with you. It must be your own. Bring it to each class.
Cheating
Cheating is unacceptable in any form. It will not be tolerated & will be documented. The student(s) and teacher will discuss the situation as soon as possible, and then the student(s) & teacher will notify parents/guardians to be aware. A form is filled out as record keeping.
1st incident~ student will receive a zero. If 2 are involved- both receive a zero
2nd incident~ same as above & student(s) receive a referral to the office.
Ending of class time
Students are dismissed by the instructor, not the bell. Do not pack up or stand up until you are dismissed. It will only be a few seconds to finish. This is just good manners.
Extra credit work
There isn't extra credit in Global Studies. The work that is given is expected to be completed, on time & done to the best of your ability. However, if a student needs extra assistance, they are always welcome to come in before or after school.
Students are expected to come to class prepared
This means that EVERYDAY you will need to have:
Your GS book ~ Pick it up from the front
Your AVID binder with GS subject notebook (yellow)
Your main binder with GS folder (yellow)
1 or 2 pens or pencils (All work to be turned in MUST be in navy blue/black ink or pencil *)
Any assignments due or handouts
Student planner
Your own RED correcting pen or pencil
Colored pencils when required for maps (posted)
Issues will be dealt with & documented as they occur. Coming to class with items not allowed.
_3_ ( THREE ) times will result in the notification of parents.
Items not allowed into class
Gum (school policy)
Pop (clear water OK (@desk/nurse/sticker) OTHERWISE place at counter top parking lot)
Candy & food
Make up
Purses, bags & backpacks
Jackets & coats
Toys
And any other non-educational materials
Issues will be dealt with & documented as they occur. Coming to class with items not allowed.
_3_ ( THREE ) times will result in the notification of parents.
Student disruptions & swearing in room 8213
Disruptive students & swearing will not be tolerated. The incidents will be documented as they occur.
_3_ ( THREE ) disruptions result in the use of the Chronic Behavior Policy/PBIS. Extreme behaviors will be dealt with immediately &/or student will be sent to the office directly.
Homework and ALL work to be turned in
All written work to be turned in MUST be done in navy blue/black ink or pencil. This is due to the fact that work has been written in yellow highlighter or "baby" blue on baby blue paper. Part of this class is following directions.
Students MAY have about 20-30 minutes of homework when it is assigned & homework is assigned often. This may involve a written assignment, map work, Cornell Notes, reviewing material, an activity, research or a reading assignment. Honors GS may require more time depending on the task. Students are expected to use the daily planner.
Missing work, late work & absent work
Absent work: two (2) days for every one (1) day absent is full credit/school policy. Write ABSENT on the work to be turned in. The absent list is checked.
Students are not allowed to sit through the answers & then turn in the work for full credit. It is unfair to the others. Students who sit through the answers can still turn the work in later, but will receive a zero (0). Students are not allowed to sit in the hall to finish work. Do not ask. Work is expected to be on time, completed & done well.
Computer issues? Students MUST have a note from home to explain; otherwise "the dog ate my homework" theory may apply.
With excused absences and in extreme circumstances late work will be accepted at full credit or exempted.
Current late work and REDO policy per IGHMS & Ms Collopy:
- Late work will be scored at a full grade reduction. Don’t sit through answers (= 0) !
- There will be a cut off for turning in late work. This will be announced and posted.
- REDOs must be discussed with Ms Collopy & documented. No >80%/IGHMS policy. This includes quiz or test retakes.
- The Final is open book (open everything), no REDO is necessary.
- ONLY these items that get full credit if late &/or revisions made ~> C-Notes and Timelines
Student progress
Grades are posted every two (2) weeks. Students with missing work will receive a print out of the assignments. Parents/guardians can access Infinite Campus portal to see the same (if needed, call our office to enroll @ 651-306-7200). For possible assignment information: click on the name of the assignment on Infinite Campus portal. Grades are updated every 24 to 48 hours, as able.

3ADDENDUM Cellphone Policy = Current IGHMS policy (currently, 2019-2020) Where phones might be used in class, generally it is NOT necessary. Cellphones can be on the student but out of sight, preferably in a pocket. If no pocket is available, in binder or folder. It is not to be used during class unless the student gets permission from the teacher for school related reasons ONLY. There is also a sign posted at the front of the room that states if the cell phone can be used or not. The cell phone policy is also stated by this teacher almost hourly.
The cell phone falls under "any other non-educational materials". Most often the phone is taking away attention from learning. Students using their cell phone will be warned, & documented & parents will be notified. In chronic cases (or in defiance) phones taken till 3:30 AND last resort; the phone will be sent to the office /IGHMS office policy. Ongoing issues will be made aware to IGHMS administration. If the student is disrespectful this becomes another issue in addition to the cell phone issue. Students are made aware of these policies since the 1st days of school.
